- Filtrele DirectShow sunt responsabile de procesarea și redarea fișierelor video și audio sub Windows. Din diferite surse, cum ar fi hard disk-ul local, Internetul sau un DVD introdus, datele media sunt trimise la un sistem de filtrare care transmite datele către software-ul adecvat, cum ar fi playerele video.
- Diferitele filtre produc împreună un așa-numit grafic de filtru. Fiecare filtru are o sarcină diferită: unul citește datele media, urmatoarele demux-uri (descompun-o în părți individuale, de exemplu date audio și video pentru filmul DVD), altul decomprimă datele (decodorul) și, nu în ultimul rând, așa-numitul randator care furnizează date pentru redare sau afișare.
- La final, datele de ieșire pot fi, de asemenea, redactate pe hard disk. Un scriitor de fișiere face atunci asta.
